Editorial Policy & Review Methodology

Our Commitment to Readers

At ManhwaExplained, every review is written with one goal: to give readers honest, in-depth analysis they can trust. We are committed to editorial independence, transparency, and quality in everything we publish. This page explains exactly how we work so you can evaluate our content with full context.

How We Rate Manhwa

Every chapter review receives an overall rating out of 10, composed of three individually scored dimensions. These scores are not averaged — the overall score reflects our holistic editorial judgment, informed by but not mechanically derived from the sub-scores.

Story — 40% Weight

Evaluates plot progression, pacing, narrative coherence, and how the chapter advances the overall arc. We consider whether the chapter provides satisfying developments, introduces meaningful conflict, and respects the reader's investment. A chapter that moves the story forward with purpose and surprise scores highest.

ScoreMeaning
9–10Exceptional — masterful storytelling that redefines the genre
7–8Great — strong narrative with compelling momentum
5–6Average — functional but lacks standout moments
3–4Below average — noticeable issues with pacing or logic
1–2Poor — fundamental narrative problems

Art — 30% Weight

Evaluates panel composition, visual storytelling, character design consistency, action choreography, color work, and standout artistic moments. We consider both the technical skill on display and how effectively the art serves the narrative — a beautifully drawn chapter that fails to communicate the story visually scores lower than one where art and story work in harmony.

Characters — 30% Weight

Evaluates character development, dialogue quality, emotional depth, relationship dynamics, and whether characters behave consistently within the established world. We look for growth, nuance, and authenticity — not just whether a character is “likeable” but whether they feel like a real person navigating their circumstances.

Series Overall Ratings

A series overall rating represents the weighted quality across all reviewed chapters, with a recency bias — recent chapters carry slightly more weight to reflect the series' current trajectory. We periodically re-evaluate overall scores as series evolve, and significant rating changes are noted in the series overview.

Our Review Process

Every review published on ManhwaExplained follows a four-step editorial process designed to ensure accuracy, depth, and fairness:

  1. Read & Analyze: The assigned reviewer reads the chapter at least twice — once for the reading experience and once for analytical observation. Key moments, art techniques, dialogue beats, and narrative callbacks are documented.
  2. Write the Review: The reviewer writes the full analysis from scratch. We never use AI-generated content for reviews. Each chapter review averages 1,500–2,000 words of original analysis covering plot, art, characters, themes, and predictions.
  3. Editorial Review: A second team member reviews for factual accuracy, clarity, spoiler handling, rating consistency, and adherence to our style guide. This step catches errors and ensures our quality bar is maintained.
  4. Publish & Iterate: After publication, we monitor reader feedback and community discussion. If new information or compelling community insights warrant revision, we update the review with a transparent changelog.

Spoiler Policy

We take spoilers seriously. Our approach:

  • Review excerpts and summaries are spoiler-free. The quick summary box at the top of each review gives you a feel for the chapter without revealing key plot points.
  • Major spoilers are clearly marked. If our analysis requires discussing major plot revelations, character deaths, or twist endings, we precede those sections with a visible spoiler warning.
  • Titles never contain spoilers. Chapter review titles are designed to be descriptive without giving away plot points, ensuring you can browse our site and social feeds safely.
  • All community interactions are moderated for unmarked spoilers to protect readers who haven't caught up.

Independence & Conflict of Interest

ManhwaExplained does not accept payment, sponsorship, gifts, or free access from manhwa publishers, platforms, or creators in exchange for reviews. Our opinions are entirely our own and are never influenced by commercial relationships.

If we ever receive review copies, early access, or press materials, we disclose this clearly at the top of the affected review with the exact nature of the arrangement.

Affiliate Links & Monetization

Some links on our site direct to external reading platforms where you can read the manhwa we review. These are affiliate links that may generate revenue for ManhwaExplained at no additional cost to you.

Important:

  • All affiliate links carry rel="nofollow sponsored" attributes as required by search engine guidelines.
  • Affiliate links are always visually distinct — our “Read Now” buttons are clearly labeled.
  • The presence of an affiliate link never influences our editorial judgment, rating, or coverage decisions.
  • We only link to platforms we trust and would use ourselves.

Corrections & Updates Policy

We strive for accuracy, but mistakes happen. When they do, we handle corrections transparently:

  • Minor corrections (typos, broken links, formatting) are fixed immediately without notation.
  • Factual corrections (wrong character names, plot details, dates) are corrected and noted at the top of the article with the date of the fix and a brief explanation.
  • Rating revisions are rare but possible. If we revise a rating after publication, we explain why in an editor's note and retain the original rating for transparency.
  • Readers can report errors via email at [email protected] or through our social channels. We review all submissions within 48 hours.
